It is an election year in the United States and the standard topics of interest including: taxes, education, the economy and homeland security will be discussed and dissected extensively by both candidates. One topic that hasn’t always been a standard topic but has become important over time is abortion. Both Senator McCain and Senator Obama have very different views about the issue; McCain is absolutely against it, while Obama believes it should be avoided if possible and that the decision is ultimately the mother’s choice. Both candidates are taking advice from their reverends/priests and taking a conservative position on the issue. These religious influences on the candidates are preaching abortion as a sin according to their religion and I agree with them, but what troubles me is whether the right message is preached during Sunday Service. The parental responsibility to teach their children to abstain from sexual relations until they’re married or of proper age would prevent young people of even thinking of abortion as an option in the first place. According to Matthew 15:19 and 2 Corinthians 12:21 , the Lord Jesus clearly says that you cannot have a sexual relationship without marriage and those who become pregnant without marriage is immoral. I must also say that in the Koran, the Surah an-Nur clearly says that you cannot have a sexual relationship without marriage.
Therefore, I am holding the religious teachers (rabbis and priests) responsible for failing to maintain the guidelines of their holy book whether it is the Bible or the Torah. I condemn both candidates for not fully understanding their own religious beliefs and letting that affect their political campaigns. I believe it is damaging to us as a whole to let issues like abortion enter into our decision to choose a political leader because it is essentially a non-issue if you act responsibly and morally. This issue should not even be discussed in the first place, especially in the United States, the focus should be on creating jobs and helping the economy as well as cleaning up the environment. The influences of lobbyists and religious figures have made it difficult for politicians to focus on what really matters to the people and the world has suffered as a result.
Similarly the issue of same-sex marriages has become a major issue when deciding on choosing a political leader. In the U.S, Senator Obama opposes same-sex marriages, but also opposes a constitutional ban and instead supports civil unions. Senator John McCain feels the same way and additionally feels that individual states should decide on the issue on a case by case basis. I may just be a humble human being, but in my opinion we are not supposed to engage in what is strictly prohibited by the rules and laws of the almighty heavenly father. So if these and other candidates choose to talk about this issue in order to get an advantage in the race to the white house while simultaneously disconnecting with God, that is their prerogative. However, I believe that there will be more consequences to this political race than a winner and a loser because as we all were put here by God, we all will also meet God again for his final judgment.
